Keeping Jellyfish

When considering keeping jellyfish in a domestic or commercial environment, there are obvious practicalities that must be considered to keep the jellies fit and healthy.

Jellyfish Aquarium

Jellyfish aquarium set up is markedly different to that of a standard marine aquarium tank.

Aquarium Water Filtration

Water impurities must be filtered from a jellyfish aquarium as they would a tropical tank.  However, a standard filtration system would prove too powerful and ultimately fatal for jellyfish, especially weak swimmers like Moons.

Cubic Jellyfish aquarium [link to shop aquariums] utilise a less aggressive, yet equally effective filtration system.

Aquarium Water Quality

Water Parameters

Acidity (pH) 8.1 – 8.4
Alkalinity (AT)7.4 - 8.4 dKH
Ammonia (NH3) = 0.0 ppm
Nitrate (NO3) < 10.0 ppm
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) < 0.05 ppm
Phosphate (PO4) < 2.0 ppm
Salinity* (PSU) 34-35ppt

13-26°C (depending on species, try to adjust the temperature to match the area where from which they were collected).
For most Moon Jellyfish, a temperature between 16-20°C is advised. In most situations this will coincide with the aquarium maintaining a temperature a degree or two below ambient room temperature thereby negating the need for any heating

Should temperatures climb above the desired range, the use of a chiller is advised.  Cubic jellyfish aquariums have connections supplied at the rear of the aquarium (refer to the aquarium user manual for more information).

*Although some jellyfish can tolerate a wide salinity range, it is generally still recommended to house them in water with a salinity close to that of natural seawater.

Aquarium Cleaning

A weekly churn of 10%-15% of the tank’s water using salted reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Feeding Jellyfish

Like any creature, jellyfish need food, but not just any food.  When live brine shrimp are unavailable, formulated jellyfish food produced by Cubic is designed to offer a highly nutritious diet in small enough pieces (typically 100-350 microns) without the need for supplimentary food stuffs.

Feeding Frequency

Jellyfish need to be fed daily, ideally once or twice.

Aquarium jellyfish that are carefully tended, fed daily and treated with antibiotics if they develop infection, may live several years.
